Carter Brothers in Key West: "Family Reunion" Edition

Created: Friday, 02 March 2012

“Are you all family or something? Is this a family reunion?”

Thus asked a tourist who wandered into the Hog’s Breath Saloon last night, upon seeing all the friends of the Carter Brothers -- who have flown in from around the country or biked from their homes in good 'ole Key West-- to spend this week with the band as per tradition. The joyous dancing, the sing-a-longs, the hugs, the laughter, the smiles and hoots from listening to great music well played, and the welcoming of new friends of the band into our group – I guess that would be enough to prompt someone to think we are all one big family.

Great Music as a Fitting Tribute to Ross Sermons

Created: Monday, 16 January 2012

Saturday night with the Carter Brothers was a joyous pinnacle of the week. From the moment the band took the stage the Hog’s Breath was packed. There was barely a few square feet right in front of Danny’s mic stand where one could dance –which several of us did. The rest of the space was filled with curious tourists who, it turned out, were music lovers not disruptive spring break-types. Before long everyone was either dancing or mesmerized by the Carter Brothers unique fusion music, or both. Young and old. People dancing alone or in circle groups. Women with women. Strangers and married people. No negative energy, just the joy of hearing great songs for the first time, or the thousandth. Maybe it all emanated from the good karma that always comes from having Eddie Standifer on stage sitting in on percussion!

Fun with the Carter Bros @ the Hog's Breath

Created: Wednesday, 11 January 2012

The Carter Brothers followed up their breakthrough performance Saturday night with two solid shows at the Hog’s Breath Monday and Tuesday – despite Danny getting a mild cold and Ross recovering from one. Each night began the same way, with a batch of Danny’s original songs that have become crowd favorites here, such as “Shelby Street,” “Radio Girl” and “Green River”. After working through those, high energy tunes such as “Child of the Wild Blue Yonder” and “Yellow Moon” make their appearance, and the crowd, which has been spilling into the parking lot during the first set, is totally tuned into the music.

Retro Night with the Carter Brothers

Last night was a classic, “old school” night with the Carter Brothers in Key West. The band played “The Lick” for the first time in many months in response to multiple requests from the crowd. (Danny, Tim, Randy and Ross looked truly worried about picking this long instrumental up after such a hiatus but they nailed it and celebrated “mission accomplished” on stage afterwards. The bass and drum solos were out of this world and Danny went to town on his guitar.) Chris Cook played the final set filling in for Danny and sounded great after having completed his own gig at the Smokin Tuna earlier in the evening. (Yes, youth is wasted on the young!)

A Show for the Ages

Created: Monday, 09 January 2012

Saturday night’s Carter Brothers show at the Green Parrot was one for the ages. And not because I was able to snag a single (and, I must say, innocent) dance with a young woman who had her eyes on Danny, and who a friend later described as “a barefoot redhead who dances like a sex goddess”. (Members of Carter Brothers Nation tend to get right to the point with their opinions, if you hadn’t noticed.)

No, loyal blog readers, the band totally kicked ass Saturday night. I have been hearing them play 25+ times per year since I met them five years ago this week in Key West, and I have never heard them play better.  Yesterday I was at a loss for words to describe it, but today I will try.

The Carter Brothers, One "Spoonful" at a Time

Created: Friday, 13 January 2012

The last two days with the Carter Brothers have been terrific, but not without their some challenging moments. Wednesday night’s show was another solid performance by the band. Everyone’s spirits were lifted when long-time Carter Brothers fan and friend Diane Jackman arrived from central Florida with her husband Don. Diane's buoyant personality made us all smile as it always does, and she made her presence felt immediately on the dance floor, as she did the following night as well.  I had recovered just in time from Sally Galbraith's return to the dance floor (after breaking her leg last summer) when she had worn this fan club president out!

The Longest Day (and a Great One for Music Lovers)

Created: Saturday, 07 January 2012

How terrific to be back in Key West with the hardest working band in the world (at least yesterday) – the Carter Brothers Band. The guys played three very long sets Friday at the Green Parrot. The “soundcheck” at 5:30pm was performed before a huge crowd of mostly locals who ate up the new songs and other favorites.

A bunch of us hard core fans took to the dance floor – even though there wasn’t much of it due to the size of the crowd. Gail Hardy, Alicia Renner, Donna Nelson and Candace Estep gave me, each other, and Gail’s date Tom an aerobic workout heavy on fun and silliness. A group of tourists from Ireland came by and enjoyed the music, especially “Road to Roosky”. This performance kicked off the “soundcheck” series for 2012 and the band got a great introduction from the Parrot’s top brass.
